If there is any one thing that our cause cannot live without, it is our volunteers. They are our eyes and ears and, very often, our voices. They will be the first ones out there doing the legwork for us when we are in dire need and will exhaust all such efforts to ensure that they have done everything they can do to help the animals be safe and comfortable. Therefore, I could not ignore this desperate plea that came in to my inbox a few days ago. It came from Michael, a volunteer for the Humane Association of Clark County, and it seems that they are in serious need:
“Will you please mention the Humane Association of Clark County on your blog to bring awareness to their situation? They are in desperate need of pet beds. All of the animals sleep on cold concrete floors. They also have a huge need for food and litter. I’m sure you hear about these situations all the time…I just need someone to help me get the word out about it. I will do the legwork to get it done. I’ve done it before. Anything you can do is GREATLY appreciated.”
When I wrote him back to find out if this was because of a sudden influx of animals, he had this to say:
“Yes, an influx of animals to say the least. Just like all over the country, jobs are disappearing in Clark County left and right, and people are giving up their pets as an alternative to having another mouth to feed. The people that run this shelter DO care, and they work hard…but at a non profit, no kill shelter…the pets add up quickly. It truly breaks my heart to think about these animals laying on the concrete floor. They don’t have families to love them…shouldn’t they at least have a comfortable place to lay down and good food to eat? I’ve written numerous organizations along with Bernadette Peters of Broadway Barks looking for aid. Awareness is key in this fight. Please help me help these beautiful, helpless animals”
They have successfully partnered with Kuranda Dog Beds for their “Donate A Bed” program. The “Donate A Bed” program was created to enable pet lovers to help bring a bit of the same comfort to these deserving shelter animals that yours enjoy at home. The beds are sent directly to the shelter in the donor’s name at a discount of about 30%. This shelter in particular is an independent, non-profit, no-kill refuge that receives NO financial assistance from taxes and is entirely dependent on contributions and other fundraising.
