Does Michael Vick deserve a second chance?

Published under General, News.

Summary:   Michael Vick was released from prison today, after his two year stay for federal dog fighting charges. Was his punishment enough? You weigh-in.

Michael Vick is, by now, a household name. Even to non-football loving people, such as myself, the name Michael Vick strikes-up a strong familiarity, along with a sickening feeling. For those that have been living blissfully unaware of this man, Michael Vick was indicted in 2007 for financing a dog-fighting operation, as well as for the cruel destruction of dogs that did not fight well, which included the dogs being drowned, electrocuted, strangled, shot, and slammed to death against the floor.

So now the question on everyone’s lips; will he play again for the NFL? Does he deserve a second chance?

There is no question that he has lost a lot already; two seasons of football (at least), millions of dollars in endorsement deals and out-of-pocket expenses to fund the care of the surviving dogs. He has also spent the last 2 years in prison; where rumor has it, he has not so faired so well. I guess it’s a far cry from his home in the Hamptons.

For once, I am going to hold my opinion back. I just want to hear from everyone else what they think is fair. Do you think his punishment was enough? Do you think he deserves more? Do you think it was too harsh? Please don’t hold back.

  1. lyssa,

NO. ‘he’ does not deserve a second chance. he deserves to made an example of, period. HE KNEW WHAT HE WAS DOING, HE KNEW WHAT PAIN HE WAS CAUSING, HE KNOWS THAT HE COMMITED A HORRIBLE CRIME.

HE’S NOT REALLY ALL THAT DUMB.

he deserves to be treated as he treated the precious creatures that crossed his path. or, rather, that he sought to cross paths with.

he deserves NOTHING. certainly not another chance at the NFL. he lost that when he made poor decisions that she is have very poor judgment, insight and forethought. i’m going to hold out hope that because of all of the animals rights organizations the NFL will not take the chance and risk the bad press and say ADIOS to ‘that’ guy.

make an example out of the bastard! strap him to one of those “rape posts” and have him get slammed a few hundred times and see if he is such a tough guy then.

he is a disgusting disgrace to human[e] beings.

    you reap what you sow.

  2. Vicki,

Personally Jess, I believe that Michael Vick should have been fried in the electric chair at San Quentin for his cruelty. Of course that would never happen here in the U.S., but maybe it would make people think before they commit such atrocities on animals. And NO he should not be given a second chance (what about a second chance for all of the animals that he killed)? And NO he shouldn’t be allowed to play in the NFL again. After spendiing 22 years in law enforcement, I can tell you that people like that do not change.

  3. Melissa,

Michael Vick is a piece of shit. Im sorry, but who does that? I love the fact that he was knocked down off his pedestal and karma has repaid him ever so nicely. He doesnt deserve a “second chance” everything that has happend to him is what he deserves. He was once a cocky football player that thought he was being slick by financing a dog fighting operation and when he was caught up in his “game” he didnt no what to do with himself. Karmas a bitch Michael and so are the dog lovers that you have fucked with.

  4. Bill in Monterey,

As much as I dislike Vick, and abhor everything he did, I believe that once someone has served their time, they should be given a second chance. His life is basically destroyed- he will never again command the kinds of money he made before. So be it. He will be shunned and probably spat on by other players and fans. So be it. And he may never get another job in football. So be it. He will forever have a red A on his chest - in this case for ASSHOLE. So be it. I certainly won’t support him, but don’t want any more of my tax money to support him.

  5. Wes,

Considering his main source of income is football, I can’t say that I want him to quit or be fired for that. I totally disagree with what he did, it was wrong and very sick, but in situations like this - i try to put myself in others shoes. If that was me and I got in trouble for doing what I did, went to jail for it, had my reputation blasted down a few notches, and then have my main source of income taken away - I think I would be at my lowest and in need or some sort of support. Isnt that what Jail and public humiliation is for? To change a persons way of thinking to a more socially acceptable way? I say let’s give him a chance, if he returnes to that lifestyle, that is when we get to physically beat him or put him against one of his own dogs or some other punishment that meets the crime.

  6. Libby,

What Vick deserves is subjective. But, If it were me in charge of the NFL, I would not personally reinstate him. I would wash my hands of him and tell him he had his chance. He had his opportunity to make the most of a millionaire lifestyle. I personally would not allow him to represent my business. I would not trust him. I will not watch another NFL football game if he gets reinstated. That’s me.

I’m even conflicted over the Humane Society discussing an alliance with him. I think he has a lot to prove before being trusted to teach the children of this world the wrongs of dog fighting and other animal cruelties. Let him scoop poop for a while before we allow him to “teach”. That’s just me. It’s America and again, I state, what he deserves is subjective. He served out his sentence and so in a practical sense, justice has been served…but I do not and will never trust him.

  7. Auntie BJ,

The NFL should refuse to reinstate him, since he broke a clause in his contract by bringing shame on them. I have no idea whether or not he learned anything about personal responsibility; I would like to hear what he really thinks now about what he did. I know that dogs have such big loving hearts that they would probably forgive him, but as a mere human, I have trouble doing so. I believe part of his sentence is to work with mistreated dogs at a shelter, which might teach him a lot. I would like to see him speak to kids about the fact that fame and money do not give you the right to feel superior to other living creatures, and I would like to see other NFL players echo such statements. Probably not in this lifetime–sigh.

  8. richard s,

  9. Annamarie Alteri,

Vick is a despicable excuse for a human being; of this there is no question. But there is something about this whole case that frustrates me to the core of my being. Vick isn’t being singled out solely because of the savagery of his actions, but also because the actions were illegal. In fact, comparable actions, which ARE legal, are carried out every day by equally despicable human beings, and yet THESE people are accepted as decent members of society. As stated on this blog, Vick has electrocuted, strangled, shot, and slammed dogs to death against the floor. Yet, if a fur farmer electrocutes a fox, that’s just “business”. If a rancher strangles or stomps to death a coyote he’s trapped, he’s just “protecting his animals” (which he plans to kill himself). When people shoot wild animals recreationally, they are exercising “cultural rights” and “celebrating their heritage”. When a hog farmer slams a weak, newborn piglet to the ground, he is “culling” for the good of his business (this is an industry-accepted practice — look it up). So while Vick deserves to be ostracized as an individual devoid of compassion and decency, so do ALL of the above mentioned people. I make NO distinction between legal and illegal savagery — ALL such savagery is equaly cruel and causes the same agony and suffering. We have a much bigger problem to deal with than Michael Vick — and a lot of people, who spit upon Vick, who are equally guilty, or support those who are.
