A jaguar, believed to be the oldest wild-caught jaguar on record, was caught in Arizona on February 16th, and is now dead. Arizona Fish and Game caught the elderly jaguar, an endangered species, via snare-trap. They promptly collared him and named him “Macho B”. Once in captivity, the jaguar fell ill and had to be euthanized. A necropsy of his remains showed he had kidney failure, likely hastened by the stress of being trapped, and twice tranquilized. As a result of this incident, The Center for Biological Diversity in Tuscon called for a review of protocol in dealing with endangered animals, like the jaguar. So basically, he was doing fine on his own in the wild. He was showing signs of kidney failure, as can happen in elderly felids, but was thriving overall. Along came humans who trapped him, tranquilized him, humanized him with a ridiculous name, and ultimately killed him. Leave it to the ego of humans to think that they can manage nature better than…nature.
